New research suggests that, with both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, CBD could be the answer for both acute and chronic sufferers of seasonal allergies such as hay fever.
CBD works with the endocannabinoid system to help promote a healthy homeostatic balance. For hay fever sufferers it can reduce inflammation, open up the sinus passageways and relieve nasal pressure and congestion.
According to The Journal of Allergy and Immunology, the stimulation of the CB1 receptor may be useful in controlling allergies as well as rashes and eczema! This is due to the CB1 receptor being largely linked to mast cell activity.
An animal study published in 2013 showed the effects of CBD on the reduction of inflamed airways in guinea pigs with a food allergy. During the investigation, the guinea pigs were administered with raw egg whites which led to a trigger in mast cells and an increase in histamines. CBD was able to reduce airway obstruction and relax muscle tone, suggesting it to be a beneficial treatment for obstructive airway disorders.
It is from studies such as these that CBD has been proven to be an effective treatment for allergy induced conditions such as Asthma and COPD!
CBD has also been proven to be beneficial in skin allergies, due to its immunosuppressant properties, the cannabinoid has shown potential in reducing rashes and itchiness! A 2013 study showed that CBD was effective for preventing inflammation and edema, making it a promising anti-inflammatory treatment for skin conditions that result from allergic reactions!
A study published in Mediators of Inflammation, from 2015, suggests that CBD was a novel new approach to the treatment of inflammation as demonstrated in asthma. Their animal study, in which lab mice with an allergic response were given a dose of CBD, determined that “CBD treatment was able to decrease the serum levels of all analyzed cytokines except for IL-10 levels.”
For those of us who aren’t well versed in the biology behind allergies – cytokines are a substance secreted by our immune systems to stimulate an inflammatory response. Because of CBD’s ability to reduce the release of these cytokines, the authors of the study concluded, “CBD seems to be a potential new drug to modulate the inflammatory response in asthma.”
Cannabidiol may also prove to be an excellent candidate because of its interaction with the endocannabinoid system. In recent years, the endocannabinoid system has become a popular subject of research among those seeking novel approaches to treating allergy inflammatory responses. We are only now seeing links between our own cannabinoids and their role in airway restriction (an inflammatory response).
